چکیده

T under intensive management are often subject to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Diseases usually are most damaging when weather or cultural conditions favor the disease-causing agent but not plant growth and vigor. Cultural conditions that enhance turfgrass diseases include close mowing, inadequate or excessive nitrogen fertility, light and frequent irrigations, excessive thatch, poor drainage, and shade. Good turf management practices often greatly reduce the impact of diseases by promoting healthy plants that are better able to resist infections. Even under good management, however, diseases sometimes cause excessive damage to highly managed turfgrasses. The proper use of fungicides in these instances, in conjunction with good cultural practices that promote quality turf, can be an important part of an overall disease management program. Fungicides available for controlling turfgrass diseases in Kentucky are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Specific application rates, safety precautions, and other important information are provided on the labels of the formulated products. Read these labels completely and carefully before using fungicides.

The third chapter in a story about turfgrass nitrate leaching

Nitrate concentrations of groundwater are increasing in residential areas. One probable cause is input of nitrogen fertilizers to maintain healthy turfgrass. This study was conducted to evaluate differences in nitrate concentrations in soil water between sites fertilized with chemical or organic fertilizer. To obtain nitrate concentrations leaching below turfgrass and evaluate the impact to gro...

The Ecological Impact of Introducing a Foreign Organism into the Turfgrass Ecosystem

Rationale The use of biological control organisms to augment chemical pesticide applications is gaining popularity amongst the environmentally conscious. While a moderate amount of information is known about the effect of pesticides on the indigenous ecology of a given environment, relatively little data exists describing the effect of introducing living organisms to a native community, especia...

Expression of a Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Penaeidin4-1 in Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) Enhances Plant Fungal Disease Resistance

BACKGROUND Turfgrass species are agriculturally and economically important perennial crops. Turfgrass species are highly susceptible to a wide range of fungal pathogens. Dollar spot and brown patch, two important diseases caused by fungal pathogens Sclerotinia homoecarpa and Rhizoctonia solani, respectively, are among the most severe turfgrass diseases. Currently, turf fungal disease control ma...

Compost: A study of the development process and end-product potential for suppression of turfgrass disease

The relationships among the chemical, physical and biological aspects of compost and their role in suppression of turfgrass pathogens are reviewed. The composting process, mediated by microbial activity, is a€ected by physical and chemical characteristics which include temperature, aeration, moisture content, C:N ratio and pH. In the absence of parameter restrictions, the microbial community fo...

Modulation of Immunological Pathways in Autistic and Neurotypical Lymphoblastoid Cell Lines by the Enteric Microbiome Metabolite Propionic Acid

Propionic acid (PPA) is a ubiquitous short-chain fatty acid which is a fermentation product of the enteric microbiome and present or added to many foods. While PPA has beneficial effects, it is also associated with human disorders, including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). We previously demonstrated that PPA modulates mitochondrial dysfunction differentially in subsets of lymphoblastoid cell ...
